Anxiety Treatments

There are numerous anxiety treatments available: some more efficient, others more expensive. Although we'd expect drugs to be a solution, medication is just a temporary symptom reliever that allows the discomfort to reappear once the drug administration is discontinued. Psychotherapy brings most of the hopes and solutions in terms of anxiety treatments but it is pretty costly and lengthy. Self-soothing methods on the other hand have a great range of success being complementary to the use of any other solutions meant to eliminate panic bouts. Lifestyle changes could also be necessary for the emotional healing background, and they are most of the time a must in the recovery process that an anxiety patient goes through.

Alternative therapies provide viable anxiety treatments as well; all you need to do is research and learn which would help you better. Many experts advise anxiety patients to go for the method or treatment that improves their condition. Most such anxiety treatments focus on relaxation, and although the techniques are different, they converge towards the same finality: a better state of mind, worry-free and calm. Thus, reflexology, acupressure, massage, visualization exercises, yoga, aromatherapy or the use of positive assertions could be successfully used in reducing the number and eventually eliminating the chances of getting a panic attack.

Self treatment is possible and in fact encouraged by specialists who believe that the approach to this nervous condition has to be constant and persistent. Anxiety treatments that rely only on psychotherapy, limit one to a certain dependency on the therapist. Unfortunately, you don't have the expert available all the time, and even if you try to put into practice some of the exercises you have used together, this may not be enough to keep panic away. Therefore, besides the therapy sessions, you need to learn how to be in control of your mind without giving in to anxiety attacks.

Do not switch between anxiety treatments randomly and too frequently. The idea is to be persistent in one particular method and apply it efficiently and constantly. You should try new things if you consider that it is not working or when the condition reaches a stagnation point. All in all, anxiety treatments should not be chosen lightly and without some professional assistance too. Some therapists are more open to cooperation with other complementary treatments than others: it is therefore a good idea to have a certain flexibility in the approach to the ailment.

I'm honestly not a big fan of psychotherapy. When dealing with my own anxiety problems, I found that meditation was the most effective way to deal with my panic attacks. The theory of anxiety I hold with the most is the belief that for whatever reason the fight or flight mechanism goes off without there being a need for flight or fight. In effect the brain is signaling one thing, while the body is signaling another and the crossed signals are the cause of anxiety, panic attacks, etc.

I stumbled upon meditation quite by accident. It was a part and parcel of the training I was doing in martial arts at the time. The effects were not noticable immediately, but over time, my panic attacks became less and less acute. I still remember the day when I felt the onset of a panic attack and just controlled my breathing and the feeling passed.

That event is why I believe that anxiety arises out of misfiring of the hypothalamus and/or limbic system. By calming the body and mind through meditation, you can learn to influence this system not to fire in inappropriate situations. In fact, you may find a certain coolness under fire and ability to perform even in the most dire of crisis situations.
